We captured some sheep belonging to the enemy and seized them as plunder, then set up our cooking pots. The Prophet ﷺ passed by the pots and ordered that they be overturned. Then he said, "Plunder is not permissible."
أصبنا غنما للعدو، فانتهبناها فنصبنا قدورنا، فمر النبي ﷺ بالقدور، فأمر بها فأكفئت ثم قال: إن النهبة لا تحل.
Ibn Majah (3938) narrated it, and the wording is his, along with Tayalisi (1291) and Abdul-Razzaq (18841), and Hakim graded it sahih (2/134). All of them narrated it through various routes from Simak, from Thalaba bin Hakam, who related it.In the version of Abdul-Razzaq and Hakim, it states that this took place on the day of Khaybar. Ibn Hibban (5169) narrated it through the route of Sharik, from Simak, with the same wording, except that it says "the day of Hunayn" instead of Khaybar. Bukhari, in Tarikh al-Kabir (2/173), affirmed that "Khaybar" is the more correct version. Its chain of transmission is hasan because of Simak bin Harb, for his hadith is hasan. Hakim said, "It is a hadith sahih in its chain of transmission, though the two of them (Bukhari and Muslim) did not include it, because of the hadith of Simak bin Harb, for he narrated it on one occasion from Thalaba bin Hakam, from Ibn Abbas, from the Prophet ﷺ."I say, Bukhari affirmed in Tarikh al-Kabir (2/173) that the mention of Ibn Abbas in the chain of transmission of this hadith is not correct, and likewise Abu Zura and Abu Hatim said the same. See al-Ilal (2222).
