We were with the Prophet ﷺ at Dhul-Hulayfah when the people grew hungry. We captured some camels and sheep, and the Prophet ﷺ was at the rear of the people. They hurried and set up the cooking pots, but he ordered that the pots be overturned. Then he divided the spoils, equating ten sheep with one camel. One of the camels bolted away, and there were only a few horses among the people. They chased after it, but it exhausted them. So a man took aim at it with an arrow, and Allah halted it.The Prophet ﷺ said, "These beasts have wild tendencies like those of wild animals, so whatever bolts away from you, do with it as this man did."My grandfather said, "We hope, or fear, that we may meet the enemy tomorrow, and we have no knives with us. May we slaughter with sharpened reeds?"He replied, "Whatever causes blood to flow and over which the name of Allah has been mentioned, eat it, except for the tooth and the nail. I will tell you why. As for the tooth, it is a bone, and as for the nail, it is the knife of the Abyssinians."
Bukhari narrated it in jihad and campaigns (3075), and Muslim in sacrifices (1968:20), both through Saeed bin Masruq, from Abaya bin Rifa bin Rafi bin Khadij, from his grandfather Rafi, who mentioned it.
