We set out with the Prophet ﷺ toward Khaybar, traveling by night. He then mentioned part of the story of Khaybar, and said, "When the two sides drew up in ranks, Amir's sword was short. He reached out with it to strike at a Jew's leg, but the blade rebounded and struck the inside of Amir's own knee, and he died from it."He continued, "When they returned, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw me and took my hand."He asked, "What is the matter with you?"I said to him, "May my father and mother be ransomed for you, people are claiming that Amir's deeds have been rendered worthless."The Prophet ﷺ said, "Whoever said that has lied. He has two rewards," and he held two of his fingers together. "He was a striver, a warrior. Few Arabs have walked the earth like him."
Bukhari narrated it in Maghazi (4196), and Muslim in Jihad wal-Sayr (1802/123), through various chains from Hatim bin Ismail, from Yazid bin Abu Ubayd, freedman of Salama bin Akwa, from Salama bin Akwa, and he related it. His statement, "he walked with it," means either on the ground or in battle. On this subject there is also a report from a man among the companions of the Prophet ﷺ, who said, "We raided a settlement of Juhayna, and a Muslim man went after one of them and struck at him with his sword, but he missed him and struck himself instead. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'He is your brother, O Muslims.' The people rushed to him and found that he had died, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ wrapped him in his clothes along with his blood, prayed over him, and buried him. They said, 'O Messenger of Allah, is he a martyr?' He said, 'Yes, and I am a witness for him.'"Abu Dawud narrated it (2539), and Bayhaqi through his chain (110/8), saying, Hisham bin Khalid Dimashqi told us, Walid told us, from Muawiya bin Abu Salam, from his father, from his grandfather Abu Salam, from a man among the companions of the Prophet ﷺ, and he related it. Its chain contains Walid bin Muslim, who is a mudallis, and he narrated it using "an."Muawiya's father is Salam bin Abu Salam. Abu Hatim said, "Salam bin Abu Salam Habashi, the father of Muawiya bin Salam, I do not know of anyone who narrated from him. People only narrate from Muawiya bin Salam, from his grandfather, or from Muawiya bin Salam, from his brother. But as for Muawiya bin Salam narrating from his father, no."Abu Dawud said, following the hadith mentioned, "It is actually from Muawiya, from his brother, from his grandfather." Mizzi quoted this from him in Tuhfat Ashraf (208/11).This is why Mizzi said, in the biography of Salam bin Abu Salam in Tahzib Kamal, after pointing out this narration of Abu Dawud through the chain of Muawiya bin Salam, from his father, from his grandfather, "If that is indeed preserved correctly."Moreover, this Salam bin Abu Salam was not deemed reliable by anyone, which is why Ibn Hajar said, "unknown."
