The Messenger of Allah ﷺ burned the palm trees of Banu Nadir and cut them down, at the place called Buwayra. Then this verse was revealed, "Whatever palm trees you cut down or left standing upon their roots, it was by the permission of Allah" [Hashr 59:5].
حرق رسول الله ﷺ نخل بني النضير، وقطع-وهي البويرة- فنزلت: {ما قطعتم من لينة أو تركتموها قائمة على أصولها فبإذن الله}
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Military Expeditions (4031), and Muslim in the Book of Jihad and Expeditions (1746:29), both through the route of Layth, from Nafi, from Abdullah bin Umar, who related it.His saying, "Buwayrah," refers to a place with palm trees belonging to Banu Nadir. Regarding the divine statement, "linah" [meaning palm trees], this refers to all types of palm trees except the ajwah variety. It has also been said that it refers to all palm trees without exception. The varieties of palm trees in Madinah number one hundred and twenty types.This hadith establishes the permissibility of cutting down and burning the trees of those waging war, in order to reduce the resources available to them. This is the view of the majority of scholars.
