The Messenger of Allah delivered a sermon and said, "Zayd took the banner and was struck down, then Jafar took it and was struck down, then Abdullah bin Rawaha took it and was struck down, then Khalid bin Walid took it without having been appointed, and Allah granted victory through him. It would not please me," or he said, "it would not please them, that they were here with us," and his eyes were overflowing with tears.
خطب رسول الله فقال: أخذ الراية زيد فأصيب، ثم أخذها جعفر فأصيب، ثم أخذها عبد الله بن رواحة فأصيب، ثم أخذها خالد بن الوليد عن غير إمرة، ففتح عليه، وما يسرني- أو قال: ما يسرهم- أنهم عندنا، وقال: وإن عينيه لتذرفان.
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Jihad and Military Expeditions (3063) from Yaqub bin Ibrahim, who said, Ibn Ulaya related to us, from Ayub, from Humayd bin Hilal, from Anas bin Malik, and he mentioned it.His saying, "It would not please them to be brought back to us," means that because of what they had witnessed of the honor granted through martyrdom, it would not please them to return to this world as they had been before.Fath al-Bari (6/17).
