The Messenger of Allah ﷺ dispatched a military expedition in which I took part. He said, "If you encounter so-and-so and so-and-so, burn them with fire."Then, when we came to bid him farewell, the Prophet ﷺ said, "I had ordered you to burn those two men with fire, but no one should punish with the punishment of Allah except Allah Himself. So if you encounter them, kill them instead."
بعث رسول الله ﷺ سرية وأنا فيهم، فقال: إن لقيتم فلانا وفلانا فحرقوهما بالنار، فلما ودعنا النبي ﷺ قال: إني كنت أمرتكم أن تحرقوهما بالنار، وإنه لا ينبغي أن يعذب بعذاب الله غيره، فإن لقيتموهما فاقتلوهما.

Nasai narrated it in Al-Kubra (8753), from Harith bin Miskin, read aloud to him, from Ibn Wahb, who said, Amr bin Harith narrated to me, and he mentioned another, from Bukayr bin Abdullah, from Sulayman bin Yasar, from Abu Hurairah, and he related it.Bukhari mentioned it with a suspended chain in the chapter on jihad and expeditions (2954), from Ibn Wahb, "Amr informed me," by himself, with this same wording.In another place, Bukhari (3016) narrated it without mentioning the farewell.
