The Messenger of Allah ﷺ informed them of the expedition to Badr, and Abu Umama resolved to go out with him. His maternal uncle Abu Burda bin Niyar said to him, "Stay behind to care for your mother, my sister's son."Abu Umama replied, "No, you stay with your sister."The matter was mentioned to the Prophet ﷺ, who instructed Abu Umama to remain with his mother and took Abu Burda along instead. When the Prophet ﷺ returned, she had already died, so he prayed the funeral prayer over her.
أن رسول الله ﷺ أخبرهم بالخروج إلى بدر، وأجمع الخروج معه، فقال له خاله أبو بردة بن نيار: أقم على أمك يا ابن أخت فقال أبو أمامة: بل أنت أقم على أختك. فذكر ذلك للنبي ﷺ، فأمر أبا أمامة بالمقام على أمه، وخرج بأبي بردة فقدم النبي ﷺ وقد توفيت فصلى عليها.

Tabarani related it in Al-Kabir (1/247) from Abdullah bin Ahmad bin Hanbal, who said, my father narrated to me, Abdul-Rahman bin Mahdi narrated to us, Abdullah bin Ahmad bin Muneeb Madani narrated to us, from his grandfather Abdullah bin Abu Umama, from Abu Umama, and he mentioned it. Its isnad is hasan because of Abdullah bin Abu Umama, for he is hasan al-hadith. Hafiz Haythami said in Al-Majmu (3/32), "Its narrators are trustworthy."As for what was narrated from Abu Saeed Khudri, who said, a man emigrated to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ from Yemen, so he asked him, "Do you have anyone in Yemen?" He said, "My parents." He asked, "Did they give you permission?" He said, "No." He said, "Go back to them and seek their permission. If they give you permission, then strive in jihad, and if not, then be dutiful to them."Abu Dawud (2530) and Ahmad (11721) related it, and Ibn Hibban (422) and Hakim (2/103-104) graded it sahih, through the route of Darraj, from Abu Haytham, from Abu Saeed, and he mentioned it. In it is Darraj Abu Samh, and there is weakness in his narration from Abu Haytham. As for Hakim, he said, "This is a hadith sahih in isnad, and the two of them (Bukhari and Muslim) did not include it in this wording, but they both agreed on the hadith of Abdullah bin Amr, 'Then strive in jihad for their sake.'" Dhahabi commented on this, saying, "Darraj is weak."
