A man came to the Prophet of Allah ﷺ and said, "I pledge allegiance to you for emigration and jihad, seeking reward from Allah."The Prophet ﷺ asked, "Is either of your parents still alive?"The man replied, "Yes, both of them."The Prophet ﷺ asked, "And you seek reward from Allah?"He answered, "Yes."The Prophet ﷺ said, "Then go back to your parents and be a good companion to them."
أقبل رجل إلى نبي الله ﷺ فقال: أبايعك على الهجرة والجهاد، أبتغي الأجر من الله، قال: فهل من والديك أحد حي؟ قال: نعم، بل كلاهما. قال: فتبتغى الأجر من الله؟ قال: نعم. قال: فارجع إلى والديك، فأحسن صحبتهما.
Muslim narrated it in the Book of Righteousness, Kinship Ties, and Manners (2449:(6)), from Saeed bin Mansur, who said, Abdullah bin Wahb told us, Amr bin Harith informed me, from Yazid bin Abu Habib, that Naaim, the freed slave of Umm Salama, told him that Abdullah bin Amr bin As said, and then he mentioned it.Abu Dawud (2528), Bukhari in Adab al-Mufrad (13), Nasai in Kubra (8643), Ahmad (6869), and Hakim (4/152) also narrated it through various chains from Sufyan Thawri, and Nasai (4163) through a chain from Hammad bin Zayd, both of them from Ata bin Saaib, from his father, from Abdullah bin Amr, who said, A man came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "I have come to pledge allegiance to you for migration, and I have left my parents weeping." He said, "Go back to them and make them laugh as you made them weep."Hakim said, "Its chain of transmission is sahih." And it is as he said. Ata bin Saaib became confused in his later years, but Sufyan Thawri and Hammad bin Zayd heard from him before that confusion set in.
