Some people said to Ibn Umar, "We enter upon our rulers and say to them the opposite of what we speak when we leave their presence."He replied, "We used to consider that hypocrisy."In another narration, "We used to consider this hypocrisy during the time of the Prophet ﷺ."
قال أناس لابن عمر: إنا ندخل على سلطاننا فنقول لهم خلاف ما نتكلم إذا خرجنا من عندهم قال: كنا نعدها نفاقا. وفي رواية: كنا نعد هذا نفاقا على عهد النبي ﷺ.
Bukhari related it in the Book of Judgments (7178) from Abu Naeem, who said, Asim bin Muhammad bin Zayd bin Abdullah bin Umar told us, from his father, who said, and he mentioned it.The other narration is found in Tayalisi (2067) from Umari, from Asim bin Muhammad bin Zayd, with the same wording. He added at the end, Umari said, my brother told me that Ibn Umar said, "We used to consider this hypocrisy in the time of the Prophet ﷺ" but its chain is daif. Umari is Abdullah bin Umar bin Hafs bin Asim bin Umar bin Khattab, and there is weakness in him, and his brother Ubaydullah did not meet Ibn Umar. However, there is another route for it.Ibn Majah (3975) and Ahmad (5829) related it through the route of Yaala bin Ubayd, who said, Amash told us, from Ibrahim, from Abu Shatha, who said, it was said to Ibn Umar, "We go in to our rulers and say one thing, then when we leave we say something else." He said, "We used to consider that hypocrisy in the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ." Its chain is sahih. Abu Shatha is al-Muharibi, whose name is Sulaym bin Aswad, and Ibrahim is al-Nakhai.
