"I saw the Prophet ﷺ and ate bread and meat with him." Or he said, "tharid."I asked him, "Did the Prophet ﷺ seek forgiveness for you?"He replied, "Yes, and for you too." Then he recited this verse, "And ask forgiveness for your sin and for the believing men and believing women" [Muhammad 47:19].He said, "Then I went around behind him and looked at the seal of prophethood between his shoulders, near the soft part of his left shoulder blade. It was a cluster of moles like warts gathered together."
رأيت النبي وأكلت معه خبزا ولحما. أو قال: ثريدا. قال: فقلت له: استغفر لك النبي ﷺ؟ قال: نعم. ولك ثم تلا هذه الآية: {واستغفر لذنبك وللمؤمنين والمؤمنت} [محمد: ١٩]. قال: ثم درت خلفه، فنظرت إلى خاتم النبوة بين كتفيه عند ناغض كتفه اليسرى. جمعا عليه خيلان كأمثال الثآليل.
Muslim narrated it in the Book of Virtues (2346) through several chains from Asim Ahwal, from Abdullah bin Sarjas, who related the same. As for his saying, "the naghid of his shoulder, which is the upper part of the shoulder." And his saying, "clustered together" means it was like a closed fist, that is, its shape after the fingers are gathered and joined together. His saying, "khilan" is the plural of khal, meaning a mole on the body. And his saying, "the warts" is the plural of thulul, meaning small bumps that rise on the body.Qurtubi said in al-Mufhim (6/136), after mentioning some of these hadiths, "All these expressions are close in meaning and indicate that the seal of prophethood was a raised, reddish protrusion beneath his left shoulder, which at its smallest was like a dove's egg and at its largest was like a closed fist. It has come in Bukhari that it was a raised piece of flesh, meaning elevated."As for his statement that it has come in Bukhari that it was "a raised piece of flesh," this is a mistake on his part, may Allah have mercy on him, for I did not find this wording in Sahih Bukhari. Rather, it occurs in Shamail of Tirmidhi, as will come in the hadith of Abu Nadra Awqi from Abu Saeed Khudri.
