Aaiz bin Amr, who was among the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, came to Ubaydullah bin Ziyad and said, "My son, I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'The worst of shepherds is the harsh one, so beware of being among them.'"Ubaydullah replied, "Sit down. You are nothing but the chaff among the companions of Muhammad ﷺ."Aaiz responded, "Did they have any chaff among them? The chaff came only after them and among others."
Muslim reported it in the Book of Governance (1830), from Shayban bin Farroukh, who said, Jareer bin Hazim narrated to us, who said, Hasan narrated to us, and he mentioned it.As for his saying, "the crusher," they said this means one who is harsh with those under his care and does not treat them gently. As for his saying, "one of the bran," it means, you are not among the excellent companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, their scholars, and those of high rank among them, but rather among their lowly ones. Bran is the husk of the flour.
