The delegation of Abdul-Qays came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and among them was al-Ashajj, brother of Banu Asar. They said, "Prophet of Allah, we are a tribe from Rabia, and between us and you stand the disbelievers of Mudar, so we cannot reach you except during the sacred month. Command us with something which, if we act upon it, will admit us to Paradise, and which we may convey to those we left behind."So he commanded them with four things and forbade them four. He commanded them to worship Allah and associate nothing with Him, to establish prayer, to fast Ramadan, to perform pilgrimage to the House, and to give a fifth of the spoils of war. And he forbade them four things, drinking from earthenware jars, gourds, hollowed wooden vessels, and pitch-coated containers. They asked, "Then what shall we drink from, Messenger of Allah?"He replied, "You should use leather waterskins whose mouths are tied shut."
Reported by Abu Dawud (3694) and Ahmad (3406), and the wording here is his, both through the route of Abu Aban bin Yazid Attar, who said, Qatada narrated to us, from Ikrima and Saeed bin Musayab, from Ibn Abbas, and he related it.Its chain of transmission is sahih, except that the mention of pilgrimage to the House in this hadith is shadhdh, because it was not yet obligatory at that time. For this reason, it is not mentioned in the narration of Abu Jamra from Ibn Abbas found in the Sahihayn.
