A delegation from Abdul-Qays came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "We belong to this branch of Rabia, and we cannot reach you except during the sacred month. So instruct us with something we can take from you and call those behind us to follow."He said, "I command you with four things and forbid you from four. Belief in Allah," then he explained it to them, "the testimony that there is no god but Allah and that I am the Messenger of Allah, establishing the prayer, giving the zakat, and that you hand over to me a fifth of whatever spoils you take. And I forbid you from the dubba, the hantam, the muqayyar, and the naqir."In another narration, muzaffat is mentioned instead of muqayyar.
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Prayer Times (523), and Muslim in the Book of Drinks (17:39), both through Abbad bin Abbad, from Abu Jamra, from Ibn Abbas. The wording given is Bukhari's, and Muslim's wording is abridged. The other narration in Muslim comes through Hammad bin Zayd, from Abu Jamra. In another narration by Bukhari in the Book of Military Expeditions (4368), through Qurra, from Abu Jamra, he said, I said to Ibn Abbas, "I have a jar in which nabidh is prepared for me, and I drink it sweet from a jar. If I drink a lot of it and sit with people for a long time, I fear I might be exposed." He said, "The delegation of Abdul-Qays came..." and he related the account.
