When wine was forbidden to us, we could find very little grape wine in Madinah, and most of our wine was made from unripe dates and ripe dates.
حرمت علينا الخمر حين حرمت، وما نجد- يعني بالمدينة- خمر الأعناب إلا قليلا، وعامة خمرنا البسر والتمر.
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Drinks (5580) via Yunus, from Thabit Bunani, from Anas, and he related it as mentioned. Muslim narrated it in the Book of Drinks (1980:3) via Hammad bin Zayd, who said, "Thabit informed us," with the same wording, and it includes the story of the prohibition of wine, but it came with the phrasing, "Their drink was nothing but fadikh, that is, unripe and ripe dates," without mentioning grapes. In Musnad Abu Yaala (4157), through another route with a sahih chain, from Anas, in the story of the prohibition of wine, it says at the end, "Their drink at that time was unripe and ripe dates."
