When wine was forbidden, the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ went to one another saying, "Wine has been forbidden and made equal to polytheism."
لما حرمت الخمر مشى أصحاب رسول الله ﷺ بعضهم إلى بعض وقالوا: حرمت الخمر وجعلت عدلا للشرك.

Tabarani narrated it in Al-Kabir (12399), and Hakim (4/144), both through the route of Abu Shihab Hannat, who said, Hasan bin Amr Fuqaymi told us, from Talha bin Musarrif, from Saeed bin Jubayr, from Ibn Abbas, and he related it. Its chain is hasan, because of Abu Shihab Hannat, whose name is Abd Rabbih bin Nafi Kinani, for he is hasan al-hadith. Hakim said, "Sahih according to the criteria of the two sheikhs." So he said, although Hasan bin Amr Fuqaymi is not among the narrators of Muslim.Their statement, "and it was made an equal counterpart to idolatry," refers to His saying, "O you who believe, wine, gambling, idols, and divining arrows are but filth from the work of Satan" [Maidah 5:90].As for what is narrated from Abdullah bin Amr, from the Prophet ﷺ, who said, "The wine drinker is like a worshipper of an idol," the correct view is that it is mawquf. Bazzar narrated it in his Musnad (2382), from Yusuf bin Musa, who said, Thabit bin Muhammad told us, who said, Fitr bin Khalifa told us, from Mujahid, from Abdullah bin Amr, who said it as related.Thabit bin Muhammad is Shaybani Kufi Aabid. Abu Hatim said of him that he was truthful, while Daraqutni said he was not strong, that he was not precise, and that he erred in many hadiths. Hafiz said he was truthful but erred in some hadiths. He alone transmitted this hadith and was not corroborated by anyone, but rather was contradicted, for Ibn Abu Shayba narrated it in his Musannaf (24538) with his chain from Abdullah bin Amr as mawquf, and its chain is hasan. So it may be that Thabit bin Muhammad erred, raising the hadith to the level of a saying of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, when the correct view is that it is mawquf.
