I came upon a group of the Ansar and the Muhajirun, and they said, "Come, we will feed you and give you wine to drink." This was before wine had been forbidden. He said, I went to them in a hashsh (which is a garden), and there was a roasted camel's head before them and a skin of wine. So I ate and drank with them. Then the Ansar and the Muhajirun were mentioned among them, and I said, "The Muhajirun are better than the Ansar."A man took one of the two jawbones of the head and struck me with it, wounding my nose. So I went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and informed him, and Allah revealed concerning him, meaning himself, regarding the matter of wine, "Intoxicants, gambling, idolatrous altars, and divining arrows are but defilement from the work of Satan" [Maidah 5:90].
