Hakim (2/35) and Bayhaqi (9/333) narrated it through the route of Hammad bin Salama, from Ayub, from Ikrima, from Abu Hurairah, and he mentioned it. Bayhaqi added, "and that one should drink from the mouth of the waterskin." Its chain of transmission is sahih, except that Bayhaqi presented it after the preceding hadith of Ikrima, from Ibn Abbas, and then said, "It has also been said, from Ikrima, from Abu Hurairah," as though he were pointing to a defect in it, and that the preserved version is the hadith of Ibn Abbas.However, it is possible that Ikrima had two teachers for this hadith, and this is supported by the fact that Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Drinks (5627, 5628) through the route of Sufyan bin Uyayna and Ismail bin Ulaya, both of them from Ayub, from Ikrima, from Abu Hurairah, concerning the prohibition of drinking from the mouth of the waterskin. He then narrated it (5629) through the route of Khalid, from Ikrima, from Ibn Abbas. The evidence here is that Ikrima narrated it both ways, and Bukhari did not treat either version as a defect affecting the other.
