The Muhajirun and the Ansar were digging the trench around Madinah, carrying the dirt on their backs while chanting, "We are the ones who pledged allegiance to Muhammad upon Islam, for as long as we live, forever."The Prophet ﷺ would respond to them, saying, "O Allah, there is no good except the good of the Hereafter, so bless the Ansar and the Muhajirun."The narrator said, They would be brought a handful of barley, which was prepared for them with rancid fat and placed before the people. The people were starving, yet the food was repulsive in the throat and had a foul smell.
جعل المهاجرون والأنصار يحفرون الخندق حول المدينة، وينقلون التراب على متونهم وهم يقولون: نحن الذين بايعوا محمدا على الإسلام ما بقينا أبدا قال: يقول النبي ﷺ وهو يجيبهم: اللهم إنه لا خير إلا خير الآخرة فبارك في الأنصار والمهاجره قال: يؤتون بملء كفي من الشعير، فيصنع لهم بإهالة سنخة توضع بين يدي القوم، والقوم جياع، وهي بشعة في الحلق، ولها ريح منتن.
Bukhari reported it in the Book of Military Expeditions (4101) from Abu Muamar, who said, Abdul-Warith narrated to us, from Abdul-Aziz, from Anas, and he related it as mentioned. Muslim also reported it in the Book of Jihad and Expeditions (1805) through other routes from Anas, in abridged form.His saying, "with ihalah" refers to the fat used for seasoning food, whether it be oil, ghee, or animal fat. It has also been said that it is what is rendered from fat tissue and suet, and it has also been said that it is solidified grease.His saying, "sanikhah" means altered in smell due to its age.
