The Prophet ﷺ pawned his armor for some barley, and I once walked to the Prophet ﷺ carrying barley bread and rancid fat. I heard him say, "The family of Muhammad ﷺ has not had even a single saa of food from morning to evening," though they were nine households.
Bukhari related it in the Book of Pawning (2508), from Muslim bin Ibrahim, who said, Hisham narrated to us, who said, Qatada narrated to us, from Anas, and he mentioned it. His statement, "and they were nine households," means that he had nine wives with him, as it is related in the Book of Business Transactions (2069) with the same chain, where it states, "The family of Muhammad did not have, by evening, a measure of wheat or a measure of grain," and he had nine wives with him.
