I was sitting in my house when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed by. He gestured to me, so I got up and went to him. He took me by the hand, and we walked together until he reached one of his wives' rooms. He entered, then permitted me to come in, so I entered behind the curtain to where she was.He asked, "Is there any lunch?"They replied, "Yes."Three loaves of bread were brought and placed on a tray. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ took one loaf and placed it before himself, took another and placed it before me, then took the third, broke it in two, placed half before himself and half before me.Then he asked, "Is there anything to go with it?"They said, "No, only a bit of vinegar."He said, "Bring it. What an excellent condiment it is."
كنت جالسا في داري، فمر بي رسول الله ﷺ، فأشار إلي فقمت إليه، فأخذ بيدي، فانطلقنا حتى أتى بعض حجر نسائه، فدخل، ثم أذن لي، فدخلت الحجاب عليها، فقال: هل من غداء؟ فقالوا: نعم، فأتي بثلاثة أقرصة، فوضعن على نبي، فأخذ رسول الله ﷺ قرصا، فوضعه بين يديه، وأخذ قرصا آخر فوضعه بين يدي، ثم أخذ الثالث، فكسره باثنين، فجعل نصفه بين يديه، ونصفه بين يدي، ثم قال: هل من أدم؟ قالوا: لا، إلا شيء من خل، قال: هاتوه، فنعم الأدم هو.
Muslim narrated it in the Book of Drinks (2052:169) from Abu Bakr bin Abu Shayba, who said, Yazid bin Harun narrated to us, who said, Hajjaj bin Abu Zaynab informed us, who said, Abu Sufyan Talha bin Nafi narrated to me, who said, I heard Jabir bin Abdullah, and he related the hadith.His words, "They placed before me on a nabi," this is how it appears in most of the manuscripts, "nabi," and the commentators explained it as a tray made of palm leaves. Qadi Iyad reported from many of the narrators, or most of them, that it is "batti," and batt is a cloak made of camel hair or wool, so perhaps it was a cloth on which this food was placed. He said that some of them narrated it as "buni." Qadi Kinani said, this is correct, and it is a tray made of palm leaves. Nawawi said this.His words, "So I entered the veil upon her," mean that I entered the space where the veil was, without seeing her skin.
