I asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about the hyena, and he said, "It is game, and a ram is to be offered as compensation if a person in the state of ihram hunts it."
سألت رسول الله ﷺ عن الضبع؟ فقال: هو صيد، ويجعل فيه كبش إذا صاده المحرم.
This was narrated by Abu Dawud (3801) and Ibn Majah (3085), and Ibn Khuzayma (2646), Ibn Hibban (3964), and Hakim (1/452–453) all graded it sahih, all of them through routes from Jareer bin Hazim, from Abdullah bin Ubayd, from Abdul-Rahman bin Abu Ammar, from Jabir, and he related it. Its chain of transmission is sahih. This hadith provides evidence for the permissibility of eating hyena meat, and this is the position held by Shafii and Ahmad. Shafii said, "People have continued eating it and selling it between Safa and Marwa without any objection, and because the Arabs consider it good to eat and praise it."This hadith does not conflict with the hadith "every fanged beast of prey," because that hadith is general while this one is specific. It has also been said that the hyena does not actually have fangs.
