The polytheists disputed with them, saying, "What Allah has killed you do not eat, yet what you yourselves have slaughtered you eat?"
في قوله عز وجل: {ولا تأكلوا مما لم يذكر اسم الله عليه}
خاصمهم المشركون، فقالوا: ما ذبح الله فلا تأكلوه، وما ذبحتم أنتم أكلتموه؟
Nasai (4437) and Ibn Jareer in his Tafsir (9/523) narrated it through the route of Sufyan Thawri, who said, Harun bin Antara narrated to me, from his father, from Ibn Abbas, and mentioned it. Its chain is hasan because of Harun bin Antara Shaybani Kufi, for he is hasan al-hadith, and the rest of its narrators are trustworthy.Abu Dawud (2818), Ibn Majah (3173), and Hakim (4/113, 231) narrated it through the route of Israil, from Simak, from Ikrima, from Ibn Abbas, and mentioned it, except that he did not specify who it was that disputed with the Prophet ﷺ about the dead animal. Hakim said in both places, "Sahih according to the criterion of Muslim." However, the hadith of Simak from Ikrima is inconsistent, though it is acceptable as a supporting narration.Abu Dawud (2819), Tirmidhi (3069), Ibn Jareer Tabari in his Tafsir (9/526), Tabarani in al-Kabir (11/457), and Bayhaqi (9/240) narrated through various routes from Ata bin Saaib, from Saeed bin Jubayr, from Ibn Abbas, with similar wording, except that in the narration of Abu Dawud, Tabarani, and Bayhaqi, those who disputed with the Prophet ﷺ were said to be from the Jews, while in the others they are described simply as "some people" without specification. Its chain includes Ata bin Saaib, who, although trustworthy, became confused in his later years. Ziyad Bakkai narrated from him, as found in Tirmidhi, and Jareer bin Abdul-Hameed Dabbi, as found in Ibn Jareer, and Imran bin Uyayna, as found in the rest. The scholars have stated in his biography that Jareer narrated from him after his confusion set in, and perhaps the others did as well. This is why Saaib erred in mentioning the Jews, when in fact it was the polytheists, as shown in the narration of Antara Shaybani from Ibn Abbas.For this reason, Ibn Qayyim criticized this narration of Abu Dawud in his Tahdhib on the Mukhtasar of Munziri (4/113) on four grounds, saying regarding the last of them, "Surah Anam is Makkan by unanimous agreement, and the coming of the Jews to the Prophet ﷺ and their disputing with him only occurred after his arrival in Madinah. As for Makkah, his disputation there was only with the polytheists, the worshippers of idols."
