Someone said, "Messenger of Allah, we will meet the enemy tomorrow and we have no knives with us."The Prophet ﷺ replied, "Be quick, or use whatever causes blood to flow, and mention the name of Allah over it, and you may eat from it. But not with a tooth or a nail, and I will tell you why. As for the tooth, it is a bone, and as for the nail, it is the knife of the Abyssinians." The hadith continues.
يا رسول الله إنا لاقو العدو غدا، وليست معنا مدى؟ قال ﷺ: أعجل أو أرني ما أنهر الدم، وذكر اسم الله فكل، ليس السن والظفر، وسأحدثك أما السن فعظم، وأما الظفر فمدى الحبشة الحديث.
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Slaughtered Animals and Hunting (5498), and Muslim in the Book of Sacrifices (1968:20), both of them through Saeed bin Masruq, from Abaya bin Rifa bin Rafi bin Khadij, from his grandfather Rafi bin Khadij, who narrated it, and the wording given here is Muslim's.
