Abu Dawud (2820) narrated it - and from his route Bayhaqi (9/313) - from Harun bin Abdullah, who said, Hammad bin Masada narrated to us, from Awf, from Abu Rayhanah, from Ibn Abbas, and he related it.Its isnad is hasan because of Abu Rayhanah, whose name is Abdullah bin Matar Basri, for he is truthful, there is no harm in him. Ibn Adi said, "I do not know of a munkar hadith from him that I should mention." The rest of its narrators are trustworthy. Awf is Awf bin Abu Jamila Arabi.Abu Dawud noted, following the hadith, that Ghundar, that is, Muhammad bin Jafar, stopped the hadith at Ibn Abbas, meaning in his narration from Awf Arabi, but I have not come across it. In any case, Hammad bin Masada is trustworthy, and an addition from a trustworthy narrator is accepted. The meaning of the hadith, as Khattabi said, is that two men would compete with each other, each one trying to outdo his companion in generosity, so this one would slaughter a number of his camels, and his companion would slaughter his, and whichever of them slaughtered more would defeat his companion and outdo him. The Prophet disliked the eating of the meat of these animals, lest it be among what had been dedicated to something other than Allah.I say, this meaning is supported by what Musaddad narrated, as in Matalib Aliyah (2356), from Rubai bin Abdullah, who said, I heard Jarud, that is, Ibn Abu Basra, say,There was a man from Banu Rabah called Ibn Athal, who was a poet. He came to Farazdaq at a watering place on the outskirts of Kufa, on condition that this one would slaughter a hundred of his camels, and that one a hundred of his camels, when the camels came to the water. When they came to the water, the two of them stood over them with swords, cutting at their hocks and hamstringing them. So the people went out on donkeys and mules, wanting the meat, while Ali bin Abu Talib was in Kufa. He went out on the white mule of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, calling out, "O people, do not eat from their meat, for it has been dedicated to something other than Allah, the Most High."Its isnad is hasan. Rubai bin Abdullah bin Jarud bin Abu Basra Basri, and his grandfather Jarud, both are truthful, as stated in Taqrib.
