It is reported from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that he met Zayd bin Amr bin Nufayl in the lower part of Baldah, before revelation had begun to come down upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ offered him a tray containing meat, but he refused to eat from it.Then Zayd said, "I do not eat from what you slaughter at your idols. I eat only from what the name of Allah has been pronounced over."In another narration, the Prophet ﷺ met Zayd bin Amr bin Nufayl in the lower part of Baldah, before revelation had begun to come down upon the Prophet ﷺ. A tray was placed before the Prophet ﷺ, but Zayd refused to eat from it.Then Zayd said, "I do not eat from what you slaughter at your idols. I eat only from what the name of Allah has been pronounced over."Zayd bin Amr used to criticize Quraysh for their sacrifices, saying, "The sheep was created by Allah. He sent down water for it from the sky, and caused pasture to grow for it from the earth. Then you slaughter it in a name other than Allah's." He said this in rejection of their practice and in reverence for Allah.
عن رسول الله ﷺ: أنه لقي زيد بن عمرو ابن نفيل بأسفل بلدح، وذاك قبل أن ينزل على رسول الله ﷺ الوحي، فقدم إليه رسول الله ﷺ سفرة فيها لحم، فأبى أن يأكل منها، ثم قال: إني لا أكل مما تذبحون على أنصابكم، ولا آكل إلا مما ذكر اسم الله عليه. وفي رواية: أن النبي ﷺ لقى زيد بن عمرو بن نفيل بأسفل بلدح، قبل أن ينزل على النبى ﷺ الوحى فقدمت إلى النبي ﷺ سفرة، فأبى أن يأكل منها، ثم قال زيد: إني لست آكل مما تذبحون على أنصابكم، ولا آكل إلا ما ذكر اسم الله عليه. وأن زيد بن عمرو كان يعيب على قريش ذبائحهم ويقول: الشاة خلقها الله، وأنزل لها من السماء الماء، وأنبت لها من الأرض، ثم تذبحونها على غير اسم الله إنكارا لذلك، وإعظاما له.
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Sacrifices and Hunting (5499) from Mualla bin Assad, who said, "Abdul-Aziz bin Mukhtar narrated to us, Musa bin Uqba informed us," and he said, "Salim informed me that he heard Abdullah (that is, Ibn Umar)" narrate it, and he mentioned it.The other narration was also related by Bukhari in the Book of the Virtues of the Ansar (3826) from Muhammad bin Abu Bakr, who said, "Fudayl bin Sulayman narrated to us, Musa bin Uqba narrated to us," with the same wording.The meal belonged to Quraysh, who had presented it to the Prophet ﷺ, but he refused to eat from it. The Prophet ﷺ then offered it to Zayd bin Amr, assuming that he followed the customs of Quraysh, but he too refused to eat from it, and spoke, addressing Quraysh, who had presented it first.His statement in the first narration, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ presented him a meal," means the meal that Quraysh had presented to him.
