The Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed by some people who were shooting arrows at a ram, and he disapproved of this, saying, "Do not mutilate animals."
مر رسول الله ﷺ على أناس وهم يرمون كبشا بالنبل فكره ذلك، وقال: لا تمثلوا بالبهائم.
Nasai (4440) and Abu Yaala (6790) both narrated it through Abdul-Aziz bin Abu Hazim, from Yazid bin Abdullah bin Had, from Muawiya bin Abdullah bin Jafar, from Abdullah bin Jafar, who related it. Its isnad is hasan. Its narrators are trustworthy and well known, except for Muawiya bin Abdullah bin Jafar Qurashi Hashimi, from whom a number of trustworthy narrators transmitted. Yaqub bin Shayba said, "He held a leading position and was described as possessing excellence and knowledge." Ajli affirmed his trustworthiness, and Ibn Hibban mentioned him among the trustworthy narrators. For this reason Dhahabi did not hesitate to affirm his trustworthiness in Kashif. So he is no less than a truthful narrator. As for Ibn Hajar, he said of him, "acceptable," but the correct view is that he is truthful and his hadith is hasan. In a similar vein, it is narrated from Abu Ayub, who said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade binding an animal for killing." Abu Ayub said, "If I had a chicken, I would not treat it that way."Ahmad (23589), Darimi (2017), and Bayhaqi (9/71) narrated it through Abu Asim, who said, "Abdul-Hameed bin Jafar told us, Yazid bin Abu Habib told us, from Bukayr (bin Abdullah bin Ashaj), from his father, from Ubayd bin Ali, from Abu Ayub," who related it. In its isnad is Abdullah bin Ashaj, from whom no one narrated except his son, and no one affirmed his trustworthiness except that Ibn Hibban mentioned him among his trustworthy narrators (14/5). He has no entry in Tajil, even though he meets its criteria.Abu Dawud (2687) and Ahmad (23590) narrated it through two routes from Abdullah bin Wahb, who said, "Amr bin Harith informed me, from Bukayr bin Abdullah bin Ashaj, from Ibn Taala," who said, "We went on a campaign with Abdul-Rahman bin Khalid bin Walid. Four foreign captives from the enemy were brought, and he gave an order concerning them, and they were killed by arrows while bound. This reached Abu Ayub, who said, 'I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbid killing while bound.'" Abu Dawud added, "By the One in whose hand is my soul, if it were a chicken I would not have bound it for killing." This reached Abdul-Rahman bin Khalid bin Walid, so he freed four slaves. This chain omits the mention of Abdullah bin Ashaj, but the correct view is to include it. Mizzi said, in the biography of Ubayd bin Taala in Tahzib Kamal, "The correct view is the opinion of those who said, 'from his father.'" Ibn Hajar followed him in Tahzib.
