I was with Ibn Umar when some young men, or a group of people, passed by. They had set up a chicken as a target and were shooting at it. When they saw Ibn Umar, they scattered away from it.Ibn Umar said, "Who did this? The Prophet ﷺ cursed whoever does this."
Bukhari reported it in the Book of Slaughtered Animals and Game (5515), and Muslim in the Book of Game and Slaughtered Animals (1958: 59), both through the route of Abu Awana, from Abu Bishr, from Saeed bin Jubayr, who said, then he mentioned it. The wording given is Bukhari's.In a wording of Muslim's, through the route of Hushaym, from Abu Bishr, from Saeed bin Jubayr, who said, Ibn Umar passed by some young men of Quraysh who had set up a bird as a target and were shooting at it, having agreed that every arrow that missed would go to the owner of the bird. When they saw Ibn Umar, they scattered, and Ibn Umar said, "Who did this? May Allah curse whoever did this. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ cursed whoever takes anything with a soul in it as a target."
