I entered the house of Hakam bin Ayub with my grandfather Anas bin Malik, and there were people who had set up a chicken and were shooting at it.Anas said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade that animals be tied up and used as targets."
دخلت مع جدي أنس ابن مالك دار الحكم بن أيوب، فإذا قوم قد نصبوا دجاجة يرمونها قال: فقال أنس: نهى رسول الله ﷺ أن تصبر البهائم.
Bukhari related it in the Book of Sacrificial Animals and Hunting (5512), and Muslim in the Book of Hunting and Sacrificial Animals (1956), both through the route of Shubah, who said, I heard Hisham bin Zayd bin Anas bin Malik say, then he mentioned it. The wording given is that of Muslim.His saying, "that animals be confined," means that they be held in place so they may be shot at until they die. The root meaning of confinement (sabr) is restraint.
