He saw a man flicking pebbles between his fingers and said to him, "Do not flick pebbles, for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade flicking pebbles," or "used to dislike flicking pebbles." He added, "It cannot be used to hunt game, nor to wound an enemy, but it may break a tooth or put out an eye."Then he saw him flicking pebbles again afterward and said to him, "I tell you that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade flicking pebbles, or disliked it, and yet you keep flicking pebbles. I will not speak to you for such and such a time."
أنه رأى رجلا يخذف فقال له: لا تخذف، فإن رسول الله ﷺ نهى عن الخذف، أو كان يكره الخذف. وقال: إنه لا يصاد به صيد، ولا ينكى به عدو، ولكنها قد تكسر السن وتفقأ العين. ثم رآه بعد ذلك يخذف فقال له: أحدثك عن رسول الله ﷺ أنه نهى عن الخذف- أو كره الخذف- وأنت تخذف لا أكلمك كذا وكذا.
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Slaughtered Animals and Hunting (5479), and Muslim in the Book of Hunting and Slaughtered Animals (1954:54), both of them through Kahmas bin Hasan, from Abdullah bin Burayda, from Abdullah bin Mughafal, and he related it.
