The Prophet ﷺ said, "I truly hope that, if my life is prolonged, I will meet Isa, son of Maryam. But if death comes to me sooner, then whoever among you meets him, let him convey my greetings of peace to him."
عن النبي ﷺ قال: إني لأرجو إن طال بي عمر أن ألقى عيسى ابن مريم فإن عجل بي موت، فمن لقيه منكم فليقرئه مني السلام.
Imam Ahmad (7970) narrated from Muhammad bin Jafar, who said, Shubah told us, from Muhammad bin Ziyad, from Abu Hurairah, and he mentioned the same. Its chain of transmission is sahih, but there was disagreement over it regarding Shubah. Muhammad bin Jafar raised it to the Prophet in this narration, while Yazid bin Harun made it stop at Abu Hurairah in the narration that follows it (7971) from Shubah. The ruling goes to the version raised to the Prophet because of the additional content it contains. Shubah frequently wavered between raising a hadith to the Prophet and stopping it at the companion. When he raised it, he only did so with certainty, and when he stopped it, that was out of caution.Haythami said in Majma (8/205), "Ahmad narrated it both as raised to the Prophet and as stopped at the companion, and the men of both chains are the men of the Sahih."
