Bukhari related it in the Book of Judgments (7210), from Ali bin Abdullah, who said, "Abdullah bin Yazid related to us, Saeed bin Abu Ayub related to us, Abu Aqeel Zahra bin Mabad related to me, from his grandfather," and he recounted it.Tirmidhi said, after citing the hadith of Abu Ayub, "The practice among some scholars is based on this, and it is the view of Ahmad and Ishaq. They argued using the hadith of the Prophet ﷺ that he sacrificed a ram and said, 'This is on behalf of whoever among my nation did not offer a sacrifice.' Some scholars said that a single sheep is only sufficient for one person, and this is the view of Abdullah bin Mubarak and others among the scholars." This is the end of Tirmidhi's statement.I say, the hadith of Abu Ayub refutes the view of Ibn Mubarak and others, for the sahih position among the scholars' statements is that a single sheep is sufficient for an entire household, even if its members are numerous. In the statement of Abu Ayub, it is mentioned that the companions used to sacrifice a single sheep on behalf of their households during the time of the Prophet ﷺ, and it appears that he ﷺ was aware of this and did not object to them.Qurtubi said, "It has not been transmitted that the Prophet ﷺ commanded each of his wives to offer a separate udhiya, despite the repeated years of sacrifices and despite their being multiple in number. Custom would require that this be transmitted, had it occurred, just as other particular details have been transmitted."The statement of Ibn Mubarak and those who held his view is to be understood as having been made before the hadiths were compiled and recorded, and that they were not aware of these hadiths, so they analogized the udhiya to the sacrificial animal of the pilgrimage.And Allah, the Exalted, knows best.
