My family pushed me toward neglecting what I had come to know of the Sunnah. A household used to sacrifice one or two sheep, but now our neighbors call us stingy.
حملني أهلي على الجفاء بعد ما علمت من السنة، كان أهل البيت يضحون بالشاة والشاتين، والآن يبخلنا جيراننا.
Ibn Majah narrated it (3148) via Abdul-Razzaq, and it is also found in his Musannaf (8150), from Sufyan Thawri, from Bayan, from Shaybi, from Abu Sarihah, and he related it, and its chain is sahih. Bayan is Ibn Bishr Ahmasi.Abu Sarihah's name is Huzaifa bin Usayd, though it is also said to be Ibn Umaya bin Usayd Ghifari. He was present at Hudaybiya with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and this was the first military engagement he took part in.Busiri said in Misbah Zujaja (3/55), "This is a sahih chain, its narrators are trustworthy."Bayhaqi narrated it (9/269) via Firyabi, from Sufyan, in the same way, adding at the end, "They say there is no udhiya obligatory on him," but he did not mention "nor the two sheep."Ibn Majah placed this hadith under the chapter heading, "Chapter on one who offers a sheep as udhiya on behalf of his household," and this meaning is clarified by the narration of Tabarani in Mujam al-Kabir (3057), from another route, from Bayan, with the same wording, where he said, "We used to offer a single udhiya, but they claimed that what kept us from that was stinginess, so they made us abandon the sunnah after we had come to know it."He also narrated it (3058) via Abdullah bin Muhammad Zuhri, who said, Sufyan bin Uyayna told us, from Mutarrif, from Shaybi, from Huzaifa bin Usayd, who said, "I saw Abu Bakr and Umar , and they did not offer udhiya, fearing that a precedent would be set by their example, so my family compelled me into hardship, even after I had learned the sunnah, until I was offering a sacrifice on behalf of each," meaning on behalf of each individual member of his household, whereas the sunnah is that a single udhiya suffices for the whole household. Its chain is hasan because of Abdullah bin Muhammad Zuhri, for his hadith is graded hasan, and the rest of its narrators are trustworthy. Mutarrif is Ibn Tarif Kufi. Haythami said in Majma (18/4), "Tabarani narrated it in Kabir, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih."
