The Messenger of Allah ﷺ distributed sacrificial animals among his companions and gave me a young goat. I returned to him with it and said, "It is only a young one."He said, "Sacrifice it." So I sacrificed it.
قسم رسول الله ﷺ في أصحابه ضحايا، فأعطاني عنودا جذعا، قال: فرجعت به إليه، فقلت له: إنه جذع، قال: ضح به فضحيت به.
Abu Dawud (2798), Imam Ahmad (21690) narrated it, and Ibn Hibban (5899) graded it sahih, through various routes from Ibn Ishaq, who said, Umara bin Abdullah bin Tumah told me, from Saeed bin Musayab, from Zayd bin Khalid Juhani, and he related it.Its chain is hasan because of Ibn Ishaq. His teacher Umara was mentioned by Ibn Hibban in Thiqat, and he is from Madinah. A number of trustworthy narrators related from him, including Imam Malik. It is well known that Malik was selective about the men he narrated from and would not narrate except from someone he considered trustworthy, especially the people of Madinah, as Ibn Hibban said in his book Thiqat (7/459), "Malik, may Allah have mercy on him, was the first among the jurists of Madinah to be selective about narrators, avoiding anyone who was not trustworthy in hadith. He would only narrate what was sahih and would not narrate except from someone trustworthy."Imam Ahmad said, "Do not hesitate to ask about a man from whom Malik bin Anas narrated, especially if he is from Madinah," as stated in Taqdimat Jarh wa Tadil, page 17.Nawawi said in his commentary on Sahih Muslim (13/169), "Abu Dawud narrated it with a good, hasan chain. Abu Dawud's version does not contain the phrase 'from the goats,' but rather it says in his wording 'a young goat.'"
