Abu Burda bin Niyar slaughtered his sacrificial animal before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had slaughtered his on the day of Eid al-Adha. He claimed that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ then ordered him to sacrifice another animal in its place.Abu Burda said, "Messenger of Allah, I can find nothing but a young goat."He replied, "Even if you can find nothing but a young goat, slaughter it."
Malik narrated it in the Sacrifices (4) from Yahya bin Saeed (that is, Ansari) from Bashir bin Yasar, with the same chain, and mentioned it. Ibn Hibban graded it sahih (5905) by this route. Its chain is sahih, even though the beginning of the chain gives the impression of being mursal, but his statement afterward, "he claimed that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded him," removes that impression, and what is meant by "claimed" here is a confirmed statement, not conjecture or doubt.Yahya Qattan narrated it and made it sound. Nasai (4397) and Imam Ahmad (15830) narrated it through the route of Yahya bin Saeed, from Bashir bin Yasar, from Abu Burda bin Niyar, that he slaughtered before the Prophet, so the Prophet ordered him to repeat it. He said, "I have a young female goat, a jazaah, which is dearer to me than two musinnah goats." He said, "Slaughter it." The wording is Nasai's, and with Ahmad it is abridged. As for what was narrated through the route of Muhammad bin Ishaq, who said, Bashir bin Yasar, the freedman of Banu Haritha, narrated to me, from Abu Burda bin Niyar, who said, "I attended the Eid prayer with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ." He said, "My wife disagreed with me when I went out early to the prayer before slaughtering my sacrifice, so I slaughtered it and prepared food from it." He said, "When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ led us in prayer and I returned to her, she brought me food that had already been prepared. I said, 'Where did this come from?' She said, 'Your sacrifice, we slaughtered it and prepared food for you from it so you could have breakfast when you came.'" He said, "I said to her, 'By Allah, I fear this may not be proper.'" He said, "So I went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and mentioned that to him, and he said, 'It counts for nothing. Whoever slaughters before we finish our rites, it counts for nothing. Repeat the sacrifice.'" He said, "So I sought a musinnah and could not find one." He said, "So I came to him and said, 'By Allah, O Messenger of Allah, I sought a musinnah and could not find one.'" He said, "'Then seek a jazaah from the sheep and sacrifice it.'" He said, "So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ granted him permission regarding the jazaah from the sheep, and he sacrificed it since he could not find a musinnah."Ahmad narrated it (16490) from Yaqub bin Ibrahim, my father narrated to us, from Ibn Ishaq, with the same chain. Muhammad bin Ishaq, even though his hadith is hasan when he explicitly states that he heard it directly and does not contradict others, here he contradicted a trustworthy narrator in this hadith, and he contradicted trustworthy and reliable narrators in other sahih hadiths, the contradiction being in his statement, "so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ granted him permission regarding the jazaah from the sheep." Yahya bin Saeed Ansari said, on the authority of Bashir bin Yasar, "I have a jazaah female goat," and the female goat, as mentioned before, is from the offspring of goats. Accordingly, this narration of Ibn Ishaq is shadhdh.
