I was with Abdullah bin Umar bin al-Khattab when a man came to him and said, "Abu Abdul-Rahman, I had a son in the land of Persia, and the plague broke out there. I made a vow that if Allah saved my son for me, he would walk to the Kaabah. My son returned, but then he died."Abdullah said, "Fulfill your vow."The man said to him, "I only vowed that my son would walk, and my son has died."Abdullah grew angry and said, "Were you not forbidden from making vows? I heard the Prophet ﷺ say, 'A vow neither hastens nor delays anything, but through it Allah extracts from the miser.'"When I saw that, I said to the man, "Go to Saeed bin Musayab and ask him."So he went to him and asked him, then returned. I said, "What did he tell you?"He said, "He told me, 'Walk on behalf of your son.'"I asked, "Does that suffice for me?"Saeed bin Musayab had said, "Tell me, if your son had a debt and you paid it off, would that suffice for him?"I said, "Yes."He said, "Then walk on behalf of your son."
Ibn Hibban (4378) narrated it from Husayn bin Muhammad bin Abu Mashar, who said, Muhammad bin Wahb bin Abu Karima told us, who said, Muhammad bin Maslama told us, from Abu Abdul-Rahim, from Zayd bin Abu Unaysa, from Saeed bin Harith, who said, and then he related it. Its chain is hasan because of Muhammad bin Wahb bin Abu Karima, for he is "truthful."Hakim (4/304) narrated it through another route from Fulayh bin Sulayman, from Saeed bin Harith, who related it in abridged form. He said, "Sahih according to the criterion of the two Shaykhs, though they did not include it with this wording."Hakim's statement "with this wording" means with this particular account. Otherwise, the hadith of Ibn Umar is in the Sahihayn, as you have seen.
