A slave of Imran ran away, so Imran swore to Allah that if he caught him, he would cut off his hand. He sent me to ask about this matter on his behalf. I went to Samura bin Jundab and asked him, and he said, "The Prophet of Allah ﷺ used to urge us to give charity and forbid us from mutilation."Then I went to Imran bin Husayn and asked him, and he said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to urge us to give charity and forbid us from mutilation."
Abu Dawud (2667) narrated it from Muhammad bin Muthanna, who said, Muaz bin Hisham narrated to us, my father narrated to me, from Qatada, from Hasan, from Hayyaj bin Imran, and he related it.Its isnad is hasan, because of Hayyaj bin Imran, for Ibn Saad deemed him trustworthy, and Ibn Hibban mentioned him in al-Thiqat. As for the statement of the Hafiz that he is "acceptable," the correct view is that he is truthful. This is why he said in al-Fath (7/459), "The isnad of this hadith is strong," and he said, "Hayyaj bin Imran al-Basri was deemed trustworthy by Ibn Saad and Ibn Hibban, and the rest of its narrators are narrators of al-Sahih." He also said, "Ahmad narrated it by way of Saeed, from Qatada, with this isnad, up to Imran bin Husayn, and it contains a story."
