He reported that the Prophet ﷺ said, "Whoever drinks wine, flog him. If he returns to it, flog him. If he returns to it, flog him. If he returns to it, kill him."
أنه قال: قال النبي ﷺ: من شرب الخمر فاجلدوه، فإن عاد فاجلدوه، فإن عاد فاجلدوه، فإن عاد فاقتلوه.
Imam Ahmad (18053), Tabarani in al-Kabir (198/1) and (366/7), and Hakim (373/4) all narrated it from the hadith of Hurayz bin Uthman Jumahi, who said, "Numran bin Mukhmir narrated to me, from Shurahbil bin Aws," and he mentioned it.Ibn Hajar said, "Its narrators are trustworthy." I say, its chain is hasan because of Numran bin Mukhmir Abu Hasan Rahbi, who is among the men of al-Taajil. It says of him, "Hurayz bin Uthman narrated from him," and Bukhari mentioned him in this way, without mentioning any criticism of him, saying, "He heard from Aws."Ibn Hajar said, Abu Dawud said, "The teachers of Hurayz are all trustworthy." Ibn Hibban mentioned him in al-Thiqat. Ibn Abu Hatim mentioned in al-Jarh wal-Tadil (497/8) that among his teachers were Hurayz bin Uthman, Muhammad bin Walid Zubaydi, and Hurayth bin Amr Hadrami.This hadith was then also narrated by another route. Ahmad (23130) and Hakim narrated it from the hadith of Muhammad bin Jafar, who said, "Shubah narrated to us, from Abu Bishr, who said, I heard Yazid bin Abu Kabsha delivering a sermon in Syria. He said, I heard a man from among the companions of the Prophet ﷺ telling Abdul-Malik bin Marwan about wine, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said," and he mentioned the same thing.Hakim said, "I heard Abu Ali Hafiz narrating this hadith, and at the end of it he said, 'This companion from the people of Syria is Shurahbil bin Aws.'"
