Burayda reported,

Maez bin Malik came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "Messenger of Allah, purify me."The Prophet replied, "Woe to you! Go back, seek Allah's forgiveness, and repent to Him."Maaz withdrew only a short distance, then returned and said, "Messenger of Allah, purify me."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said again, "Woe to you! Go back, seek Allah's forgiveness, and repent to Him."He withdrew only a short distance, then came back and said, "Messenger of Allah, purify me."The Prophet ﷺ said the same as before. When it was the fourth time, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked him, "From what shall I purify you?"He said, "From adultery."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then asked whether he was insane, and was informed that he was not. He asked, "Has he been drinking wine?" A man stood up and smelled his breath but found no trace of wine.The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked, "Have you committed adultery?"He said, "Yes."So he gave the order, and Maaz was stoned.The people were divided into two groups concerning him. One group said, "He is ruined. His sin has encompassed him." The other said, "No repentance is better than the repentance of Maaz. He came to the Prophet ﷺ, placed his hand in his, and said, 'Kill me with stones.'"They remained divided about this for two or three days. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came while they were sitting, greeted them, and sat down. He said, "Seek forgiveness for Maez bin Malik."They said, "May Allah forgive Maez bin Malik."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said, "He has made a repentance which, if divided among a whole nation, would suffice them."Then a woman from Ghamid of the Azd tribe came to him and said, "Messenger of Allah, purify me."He said, "Woe to you! Go back, seek Allah's forgiveness, and repent to Him."She said, "I see that you wish to turn me away as you turned away Maez bin Malik."He asked, "What is your case?"She said that she was pregnant from adultery.He asked, "Is it really you?"She said, "Yes."He said to her, "Wait until you give birth to what is in your womb."A man from the Ansar took responsibility for her until she gave birth. Then he came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "The Ghamidi woman has given birth."The Prophet said, "Then we will not stone her and leave her child small with no one to nurse him."A man from the Ansar stood up and said, "I will take charge of nursing him, Prophet of Allah."So he had her stoned.

عن بريدة قال

جاء ماعز بن مالك إلى النبي ﷺ فقال: يا رسول الله طهرني فقال: ويحك! ارجع فاستغفر الله وتب إليه قال: جع غير بعيد، ثم جاء فقال: يا رسول الله طهرني، فقال رسول الله ﷺ: ويحك! ارجع فاستغفر الله وتب إليه قال: فرجع غير بعيد ثم جاء فقال: يا رسول الله طهرني فقال النبي ﷺ مثل ذلك، حتى إذا كانت الرابعة قال له رسول الله ﷺ: فيم أطهرك؟ فقال: من الزني. فسأل رسول الله ﷺ أبه جنون؟ فأخبر أنه ليس بمجنون فقال: أشرب خمرا؟ فقام رجل فاستنكهه فلم يجد منه ريح خمر، قال: فقال رسول الله ﷺ: أزنيت؟ فقال: نعم فأمر به، فرجم، فكان الناس فيه فرقتين: قائل يقول لقد هلك لقد أحاطت به خطيئته. وقائل: يقول ما توبة أفضل من توبة ماعز: أنه جاء إلى النبي ﷺ فوضع يده في يده. ثم قال اقتلني بالحجارة. قال: فلبثوا بذلك يومين أو ثلاثة. ثم جاء رسول الله ﷺ وهم جلوس فسلم ثم جلس فقال: استغفروا لماعز بن مالك قال: فقالوا غفر الله لماعز بن مالك قال: فقال رسول الله ﷺ: لقد تاب توبة لو قسمت بين أمة لوسعتهم. قال: ثم جاءته امرأة من غامد من الأزد فقالت: يا رسول الله طهرني. فقال: ويحك! ارجعي فاستغفري الله وتوبي إليه فقالت: أراك تريد أن ترددني كما رددت ماعز بن مالك. قال: وما ذاك؟ قالت: إنها حبلى من الزنى. فقال: آنت؟ قالت: نعم، فقال لها: حتى تضعي ما في بطنك قال: فكفلها رجل من الأنصار حتى وضعت. قال: فأتى النبي ﷺ فقال: قد وضعت الغامدية. فقال: إذا لا نرجمها وندع ولدها صغيرا ليس له من يرضعه فقام رجل من الأنصار فقال: إلي رضاعه، يا نبي الله، قال: فرجمها.
