Burayda bin Husayb reported,

Maez bin Malik al-Aslami came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "Messenger of Allah, I have wronged myself and committed adultery, and I want you to purify me."The Prophet turned him away. The next day he came back and said, "Messenger of Allah, I have committed adultery."He turned him away a second time. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent word to his people and asked, "Do you know of any defect in his mind? Do you find anything strange about him?"They replied, "We know him only as sound of mind, one of our righteous men, as far as we can see."He came to the Prophet a third time, and the Prophet again sent to them and asked about him. They informed him that there was nothing wrong with him or with his mind. When he came the fourth time, a pit was dug for him, the Prophet gave the order, and he was stoned. Then a woman from Ghamid came and said, "Messenger of Allah, I have committed adultery, so purify me."He turned her away. The next day she said, "Messenger of Allah, why do you turn me away? Perhaps you are turning me away as you turned Maaz away. By Allah, I am pregnant."He said, "If you insist, then go until you give birth."When she had given birth, she brought the child to him wrapped in a cloth and said, "Here, I have delivered him."He said, "Go and nurse him until you wean him."When she had weaned him, she brought the child to him with a piece of bread in his hand and said, "Here, Prophet of Allah, I have weaned him, and he eats food."He handed the child over to one of the Muslims, then gave the order concerning her. A pit was dug for her up to her chest, he commanded the people, and they stoned her.Khalid bin Walid came forward with a stone and threw it at her head, and blood spattered onto Khalid's face, so he cursed her. The Prophet of Allah ﷺ heard him and said, "Easy, Khalid. By the One in whose hand my soul is, she has repented such a repentance that if a corrupt tax collector had repented like it, he would have been forgiven."Then he gave the order concerning her, prayed over her, and she was buried.
