Some men of high standing in his tribe informed him that Abdullah bin Sahl and Muhaysa set out for Khaybar due to hardship that had befallen them.Word came to Muhaysa that Abdullah bin Sahl had been killed and thrown into a pit or well. He went to the Jews and said, "By Allah, you killed him."They said, "By Allah, we did not kill him."He then returned to his tribe and told them what had happened. He came forward along with his brother Huwaysa, who was older than him, and Abdul-Rahman. Muhaysa, who had been the one in Khaybar, began to speak. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, "Let the elder speak, let the elder speak," meaning the one older in age.So Huwaysa spoke, then Muhaysa spoke. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Either they pay the blood-money for your companion, or they declare war."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ wrote to them about the matter, and they wrote back, "By Allah, we did not kill him."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said to Huwaysa, Muhaysa, and Abdul-Rahman, "Will you swear an oath and thereby claim the blood of your companion?"They said, "No."He asked, "Then shall the Jews swear an oath to you?"They replied, "They are not Muslims."So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ paid the blood-money himself. He sent them a hundred she-camels, which were brought into their courtyard.Sahl said, "A red she-camel among them kicked me."Malik said, "The faqir is the well."
Malik narrated it in Qasama (1), from Abu Layla bin Abdullah bin Abdul-Rahman bin Sahl, from Sahl bin Abu Hathma, and he mentioned it. Bukhari narrated it in Ahkam (7192) and Muslim in Qasama (6:1669), both of them through the route of Malik.More than one narrator reported it from Malik in this way, naming him Abu Layla bin Abdullah. It was also said, from Malik, from Abu Layla, Abdullah bin Sahl. This is how Bishr bin Umar reported it from Malik according to Muslim, making Abdullah his given name.
