Abdullah bin Sahl and Muhaysa bin Masud went to Khaybar, where they parted ways among the palm trees. Abdullah bin Sahl was killed.Abdul-Rahman bin Sahl, along with Huwaysa and Muhaysa, the two sons of Masud, came to the Prophet ﷺ and spoke about the matter of their slain kinsman. Abdul-Rahman, being the youngest of the group, began to speak. The Prophet ﷺ said, "Let the elder speak first."Yahya explained that this meant the older one should take the lead in speaking. So they spoke about the matter of their slain kinsman. The Prophet ﷺ said, "Will you establish your right to compensation for your slain man," or he said, "your companion, by the oaths of fifty of you?"They replied, "Messenger of Allah, it is a matter we did not witness."He said, "Then shall the Jews clear themselves by the oaths of fifty of them?"They replied, "Messenger of Allah, they are a people of disbelief."So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ paid the blood-money for him from his own resources.Sahl said, "I caught hold of one of those camels, and when it entered an enclosure, it kicked me with its leg."
Bukhari related it in al-Adab (6142-6143) and Muslim in al-Qasamah (2:1669), both through the route of Hammad bin Zayd, who said, "Yahya bin Saeed narrated to us, from Bashir bin Yasar, the freed slave of the Ansar," with the same chain. The wording given here is Bukhari's.
