I set out with my father toward the Prophet ﷺ. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to my father, "Is this your son?"He replied, "Yes, by the Lord of the Kaabah."The Prophet ﷺ asked, "Truly?"He answered, "I bear witness to it."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then smiled, laughing at how strongly I resembled my father and at my father's swearing about me. Then he said, "He shall not bring guilt upon you, nor shall you bring guilt upon him." And he recited, "And no bearer of burdens will bear the burden of another" [Fatir 35:18].
انطلقت مع أبي: مع أبي نحو النبي ﷺ فقال رسول الله ﷺ لأبى: ابنك هذا؟ قال: إي ورب الكعبة قال: حقا قال: أشهد به، قال: فتبسم رسول الله ﷺ ضاحكا من ثبت شبهي في أبي. ومن حلف أبي علي. ثم قال: أما إنه لا يجني عليك، لا تجني عليه وقرأ: {ولا تزر وازرة وزر أخرى} [فاطر: ١٨].
Abu Dawud (4495), Nasai (1572), Tirmidhi (2812), and Ahmad (7109) all narrated it, and Ibn Hibban (5995) and Hakim (2/425) graded it sahih, all of them from the hadith of Ubaydullah bin Iyad bin Laqeet, who said, "Iyad bin Laqeet narrated to us, from Abu Rimtha," and he mentioned it. The wording given is that of Abu Dawud. Some narrators abridged it, while others narrated it at length. See the Book of Clothing, chapter on dyeing the hair.Tirmidhi said, "This is a hasan gharib hadith. We do not know it except from the hadith of Ubaydullah bin Iyad. Abu Rimtha Taymi's name was Habib bin Hayan, though it is also said his name was Rifa bin Yathribi." End of quote.This is what Tirmidhi said, calling it hasan, but the truth is that it is sahih. Ubaydullah bin Iyad was deemed trustworthy by a group of scholars, among them Ibn Main, Nasai, Ajli, and Abu Naeem Fadl bin Dukayn, and others.As for his statement, "We do not know it except from the hadith of Ubaydullah bin Iyad," I say this is not as he claimed. Rather, Abdul-Malik bin Abjar also narrated it. Ahmad (17492), Nasai (4832), and Ibn Abu Asim in Diyat (315) all narrated it from the hadith of Sufyan bin Uyayna, from him, from Iyad bin Laqeet, mentioning something similar.Abdul-Malik bin Abjar is Abdul-Malik bin Saeed bin Hayan bin Abjar, who is trustworthy. He has other chains of transmission as well going back to Iyad bin Laqeet.
