The Prophet ﷺ arrested some men from my people on suspicion of an offense and detained them. A man from my people came to the Prophet ﷺ while he was delivering a sermon and said, "Muhammad, why are you holding my neighbors?"The Prophet ﷺ remained silent. The man then said, "People are saying that you forbid evil yet engage in it privately yourself!"The Prophet ﷺ asked, "What is he saying?"I began interrupting their exchange with talk, fearing that the Prophet ﷺ would hear it and invoke a curse upon my people from which they would never recover. But the Prophet ﷺ kept pressing him until he understood what had been said. Then he said, "Have they really said this, or is it just one of them saying it? By Allah, if I had done such a thing, the blame would fall on me, not on them. Release his neighbors to him."
Narrated by Abu Dawud (3630), Tirmidhi (1417), Nasai (4875), Ahmad (20019), Hakim (1/125), and Bayhaqi (53/6), all of them from the hadith of Mamar, from Bahz bin Hakeem bin Muawiya, from his father, from his grandfather, who said, then he related it. Some of them abridged it.Hakim said, "The discussion regarding the record of Bahz bin Hakeem has already preceded, making it unnecessary to repeat it, especially since the corroborating evidence for this hadith is found in the Sahihayn."I say, its chain of transmission is hasan because of Bahz bin Hakeem and his father, for they are both graded hasan in transmission.
