I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, "Whoever's intercession stands in the way of one of the prescribed punishments of Allah has opposed Allah in His command."
سمعت رسول الله ﷺ يقول: من حالت شفاعته دون حد من حدود الله فهو مضاد الله في أمره.
Abu Dawud (3597), Ahmad (5385), and Hakim (27/2) all narrated it through Zuhayr bin Muawiya, who said, Umara bin Ghaziya narrated to us, from Yahya bin Rashid, who said, "We sat waiting for Abdullah bin Umar, and he came out to us and sat down and said, 'I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say...'" He then related the hadith in a longer form, in which it says, "Whoever dies owing a debt, it will not be settled with dinars or dirhams, but rather with good deeds and bad deeds. Whoever disputes in falsehood while knowing it to be false remains under the wrath of Allah until he abandons it. And whoever says about a believer what is not true, Allah will confine him in the mire of corruption until he comes out of what he said." Its chain of transmission is sahih. This hadith's account also includes, "Whoever helps in a dispute through injustice, or helps in injustice, remains under the wrath of Allah until he withdraws from it." Ibn Majah (2320) narrated it through Husayn Muallim, and Abu Dawud (3598) narrated it through Muthanna bin Yazid, both of them from Matar Warraq, from Nafi, from Ibn Umar, who related it.Muthanna bin Yazid is unknown (majhul), but Husayn Muallim corroborated him. Matar Warraq is a subject of disagreement, though Ata bin Abu Muslim Khurasani corroborated him, from Nafi. Hakim narrated it (99/4) and said, "This is a hadith with a sahih chain of transmission."Ibn Arabi narrated it in his Mujam (640) through another route, from Ata Khurasani, from Imran, from Abdullah bin Umar, who said, "I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'Whoever says, Glory be to Allah, there is no god but Allah, Allah is greatest, and praise be to Allah, Allah will record for him ten good deeds for every letter. Whoever helps in a false dispute remains under the wrath of Allah until he withdraws from it. Whoever's intercession stands in the way of a punishment prescribed by Allah has opposed Allah in His command. And whoever slanders a believing man or woman, Allah will confine him in the mire of corruption on the Day of Resurrection until he comes out of what he said, but he will never come out.'"Ibn Abu Hatim mentioned this version in Ilal (183/2) and said, "Umar bin Yunus Yamami narrated it, from Asim bin Muhammad, from Yazid, from Muthanna bin Yazid, from Matar Warraq, from Nafi, from Ibn Umar." He said, "My father said, 'This is a mistake, the correct version is that it is attributed to Ibn Umar as his own statement, mawquf.'"I say, Ibn Abu Shayba narrated it (28661) from Abda, from Yahya bin Saeed, from Abdul-Wahhab (that is, Ibn Bukht Makki), from Ibn Umar as his own statement, limiting it to his saying, "Whoever's intercession stands in the way of a punishment prescribed by Allah has opposed Allah in His command."What appears from these chains of transmission and their texts is that Ibn Umar, or someone below him in the chain, would sometimes narrate the hadith in full, and other times in parts. This is indicated by the differing sources of the hadith, some of its paths being sahih while others were not. It is not unlikely that Ibn Umar, or someone below him, narrated it at one point as his own statement, mawquf, as Abu Hatim indicated in his statement, and as Ibn Abu Shayba's narration suggests. And success comes from Allah. As for his saying, "Whoever's intercession stands in the way," this means someone against whom one of Allah's rights has been established, and the matter has reached the ruler. But before it reaches the ruler, or in matters that are rights owed between people, the judge may intercede, and it is even recommended for him to do so, even by paying money, as the Prophet ﷺ used to do.It was said to Ali, when he had interceded for a thief, "Do you intercede for a thief?" He said, "Yes, this may be done as long as the matter has not reached the leader. But once it reaches the leader, may Allah not pardon him if he pardons him." Ibn Abu Shayba narrated it (28659).And from Zubayd bin Salt, who said, "I heard Abu Bakr Siddiq say, 'If I caught someone drinking wine, I would love for Allah to conceal him, and if I caught a thief, I would love for Allah to conceal him.'" Ibn Abu Shayba narrated it (28664).
