The wives of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ were divided into two groups. One group included Ayesha, Hafsa, Safiyya, and Sawda, and the other group included Umm Salama and the rest of the wives of the Messenger of Allah. The Muslims were aware of the Messenger of Allah's ﷺ love for Ayesha, so when any of them had a gift he wished to present to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he would delay sending it until the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was in Ayesha's house, and then the gift-giver would send his gift to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ there. The group of Umm Salama spoke among themselves, and they said to her, "Speak to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ so he may tell the people, 'Whoever wishes to present a gift to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, let him present it to him wherever he happens to be among the houses of his wives.'"So Umm Salama spoke to him as they had requested, but he said nothing to her. They asked her what he had said, and she replied, "He said nothing to me."They said to her, "Speak to him again."She said, "I spoke to him again when it was my turn, but he said nothing to me."They asked her, and she replied, "He said nothing to me."They said to her, "Keep speaking to him until he answers you."When it was her turn again, she spoke to him, and he said to her, "Do not harm me concerning Ayesha. Revelation has never come to me while I was beneath the garment of any woman except Ayesha."She said, "I repent to Allah from harming you, Messenger of Allah."Then they called for Fatimah, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and she sent word to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, "Your wives implore you by Allah for fairness regarding Bint Abu Bakr."So she spoke to him, and he said, "My little daughter, do you not love what I love?"She said, "Yes."She returned to them and informed them of what had happened, and they said to her, "Go back to him."But she refused to return. So they sent Zaynab bint Jahsh. She came to him and spoke harshly, saying, "Your wives implore you by Allah for fairness regarding the daughter of Ibn Abu Quhafa."She raised her voice until she even attacked Ayesha, who was sitting there, criticizing her lineage, while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ kept looking at Ayesha to see whether she would respond. Ayesha then began to speak, answering Zaynab back until she silenced her.The Prophet ﷺ looked at Ayesha and said, "Indeed, she is the daughter of Abu Bakr."
Bukhari narrated it in the chapter on Gifts (2581) from Ismail, who said, My brother narrated to me, from Sulayman, from Hisham bin Urwa, from his father, from Ayesha, and he mentioned it.Bukhari said, The final portion, the story of Fatimah, is reported from Hisham bin Urwa, from a man, from Zuhri, from Muhammad bin Abdul-Rahman.Abu Marwan said, from Hisham, from Urwa, People used to time their gifts to coincide with Ayesha's day.And from Hisham, from a man of Quraysh and a client, from Zuhri, from Muhammad bin Abdul-Rahman bin Harith bin Hisham, Ayesha said, I was with the Prophet ﷺ when Fatimah asked permission to enter. In this way Bukhari found fault with Ayesha's hadith concerning the story of Fatimah, on account of a break in the chain. Yet it has been established as connected in the earlier narration of Muslim, through two separate routes.
