The Prophet ﷺ had nine wives. When he divided his nights among them, he would not return to the first wife until nine nights had passed. They used to gather every night at the house of the wife whose turn it was. One night he was at Ayesha's house when Zaynab came in, and he extended his hand toward her.Ayesha said, "This is Zaynab."The Prophet ﷺ withdrew his hand, and the two women began arguing until their voices grew loud. The call to prayer was given, and Abu Bakr was passing by at that moment. He heard their voices and said, "Messenger of Allah, come out for the prayer, and throw dust in their mouths."The Prophet ﷺ went out, and Ayesha said to herself, "Now the Prophet ﷺ will finish his prayer, and Abu Bakr will come and do such and such to me."When the Prophet finished his prayer, Abu Bakr came to her and spoke to her harshly, saying, "Are you behaving like this?"
Muslim narrated it in the Book of Suckling (1462), from Abu Bakr bin Abu Shayba, who said, Shababa bin Sawwar narrated to us, who said, Sulayman bin Mughira narrated to us, from Thabit, from Anas, and he mentioned it.His statement, "Then Zaynab came, and he extended his hand toward her," was because he thought she was Ayesha, since the Prophet ﷺ could not see her due to the darkness of the night.
