The Prophet ﷺ performed the pilgrimage with his wives. At some point along the road, a man dismounted and began driving the camels carrying them, and he hurried them along. The Prophet ﷺ said, "That is how you drive glass vessels," meaning the women. While they were traveling, Safiya bint Huyayy's camel knelt down with her, and her camel was among the strongest mounts of the group. She began to cry. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was told about it, he came and started wiping her tears with his hand, but she only wept more, even as he tried to stop her. When she persisted, he scolded and rebuked her, then ordered the people to dismount, so they did, though he had not originally intended to stop there.Ayesha said, It was my day. When they dismounted, the Prophet's ﷺ tent was pitched and he entered it.She continued, I did not know how I could approach the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and I feared he held something against me. So I went to Ayesha and said to her, "You know that I would never trade my day with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for anything. But I am giving you my day on the condition that you make the Messenger of Allah ﷺ pleased with me."Ayesha replied, "Alright."She said, So Ayesha took a head-cover of hers that had been dyed with saffron and sprinkled it with water to bring out its fragrance. Then she put on her garments and went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and lifted the edge of the tent.He said to her, "What is it, Ayesha? This is not your day."She replied, "That is the bounty of Allah, which He gives to whom He wills." So he stayed with her. When it was time to set out again, he said to Zaynab bint Jahsh, "Zaynab, give your sister Safiya one of your camels." Zaynab had the most mounts among them. She replied, "I should give a mount to your Jewess?"The Prophet ﷺ became angry when he heard that from her, and he avoided her, not speaking to her until he reached Mecca, and through the days at Mina on his journey, and until he returned to Medina, and through Muharram and Safar. He did not come to her or apportion her share of his time, and she gave up hope of him. When the month of Rabi Awwal came, he entered upon her. She saw his shadow and said, "This is the shadow of a man, and the Prophet ﷺ does not come to me, so who is this?" Then the Prophet ﷺ entered, and when she saw him she said, "Messenger of Allah, I do not know what to do now that you have come in to me."She had a slave-girl whom she used to keep hidden from the Prophet ﷺ. She said, "So-and-so is yours."The Prophet ﷺ walked over to Zaynab's bed, which had been put away, and placed it down with his own hand. Then he was intimate with his wife and was reconciled with his family.
Imam Ahmad narrated it (26866) from Abdul-Razzaq, who said, Jafar bin Sulayman narrated to us, from Thabit, who said, Shumaysah, or Sumayyah, narrated to me, Abdul-Razzaq said, in my book it is Sumayyah, from Safiyyah bint Huyayy, and he mentioned it.Its isnad is hasan because of Shumaysah. Ibn Main said, She is trustworthy (thiqah). Jarh wal-Tadil (1713).As for his saying "Sumayyah," it is possible that a distortion occurred there, or an error in reading, for it has come definitively as "Shumaysah, from Ayesha" in other chains found in Ahmad (25002, 26250), in abridged form. There is no problem with this, because the story concerns both of them, so it may be that she heard it from both, once from Safiyyah and once from Ayesha. Allah knows best what is correct. The hadith has other chains of transmission, and the one I have mentioned is the most sahih of them. His saying "afqiri" comes from al-ifqar, which means lending a camel for riding, taken from riding on the vertebrae (fiqar) of the back.
