We attended the funeral of Maymunah at Sarif along with Ibn Abbas. Ibn Abbas said, "This is the wife of the Prophet ﷺ. When you lift her bier, do not jolt it or shake it. Handle it gently. The Prophet ﷺ had nine wives. He used to divide his time among eight of them and did not allot a turn to one."
حضرنا مع ابن عباس جنازة ميمونة بسرف، فقال ابن عباس: هذه زوجة النبي ﷺ، فإذا رفعتم نعشها فلا تزعزعوها، ولا تزلزلوها، وارفقوا، فإنه كان عند النبي ﷺ تسع، كان يقسم لثمان ولا يقسم لواحدة.
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Marriage (5067) via Hisham bin Yusuf, and Muslim in the Book of Suckling (51:1465) via Muhammad bin Bakr, both of them from Ibn Jurayj, who said, Ata told me, and he related it.Muslim added, Ata said, "The one for whom no turn was allotted was Safiya bint Huyayy bin Akhtab."Ata's statement that the one for whom no turn was allotted was Safiya is a mistake. The correct account is that it was Sawda bint Zama, who gave her turn to Ayesha, as will be mentioned later.Ata also added, saying, "She (meaning Safiya) was the last of them to die, and she died in Madinah." This too is a mistake on Ata's part, for the last of them to die in Madinah was Ayesha, who died in the year 58 AH, while Safiya died in the year 50 AH. And if what he meant was the last of them to die in an absolute sense, then that was Maymuna, who died at Sarif in the year 63 AH. Ibn Abbas led the funeral prayer over her and attended her funeral.
