Umar saw Atarid al-Tamimi displaying a silk garment for sale in the market. Atarid was a man who used to visit kings and receive gifts from them. Umar said, "Messenger of Allah, I saw Atarid displaying a silk garment in the market. If only you would buy it and wear it when delegations of the Arabs come to you."I think he also said, "And wear it on Fridays."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "Only one who has no share in the Hereafter wears silk in this world."Some time later, silk garments were brought to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he sent one to Umar, one to Usama bin Zayd, and gave one to Ali bin Abu Talib, saying, "Cut it up into headscarves for your women."Umar came carrying his garment and said, "Messenger of Allah, you have sent me this, yet only yesterday you said what you said about Atarid's garment."He replied, "I did not send it to you for you to wear. I sent it to you so you could benefit from it."As for Usama, he went out wearing his garment, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave him a look from which Usama understood that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ disapproved of what he had done. He said, "Messenger of Allah, why do you look at me like this? You are the one who sent it to me."He replied, "I did not send it to you for you to wear. I sent it so you could cut it up into headscarves for your women."
Muslim narrated it in the Book of Clothing (2068:7) from Shayban bin Farroukh, who said, "Jareer bin Hazim narrated to us, who said, 'Nafi narrated to us, from Ibn Umar,'" and he mentioned it.
