The Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave me a silk garment as a gift, and I wore it. When I saw the anger on his face, I cut it up and distributed the pieces among my wives.
أهدى إلي رسول الله ﷺ حلة سيراء، فلبستها، فرأيت الغضب في وجهه، فشققتها بين نسائي.
Bukhari related it in the Book of Gifts (2614), and Muslim in the Book of Clothing (2071:19), both from the hadith of Shuba, who said, Abdul-Malik bin Maysara told me, saying, I heard Zayd bin Wahb narrate from Ali, and he mentioned it. In one version, he said, "I did not send it to you so that you would wear it. I only sent it to you so that you would tear it into headscarves to be distributed among the women."
